Why Deer Often Leave Fuzzy and Aromatic Plants Alone

One of the easiest ways to spot a plant deer tend to skip is to reach out and touch it. A lot of the more deer-resistant plants I grow share a couple of traits you can feel with your hand — fuzzy or rough leaves, hairy stems, or a strong scent when you brush against them.

Deer generally prefer tender growth, soft foliage, and high-moisture tissue — the stuff that’s easy to chew and full of water. Fuzzy and hairy leaves feel rough and irritating in the mouth, so they’re simply less palatable. Aromatic foliage adds another layer: the essential oils that make Salvia or Lavender smell wonderful to us are exactly what deer would rather avoid.

Some of the more deer-resistant choices that lean on texture or fragrance:

• ✓ Dusty Miller — felted, silvery foliage
• ✓ Angelonia — aromatic foliage and tough stems
• ✓ Salvia — strong fragrance and essential oils
• ✓ Lavender — the classic scented deterrent
• ✓ Artemisia — soft, silver, aromatic

Not every fuzzy plant is deer resistant, and not every deer-resistant plant is fuzzy.

Resistant but not fuzzy: Caladium and Coleus, for example, lean on chemistry and taste rather than texture.

Fuzzy but sometimes browsed: Lamb’s Ear, some Rudbeckias, and a few sunflowers can still get sampled despite the fuzz.

Fuzz helps and fragrance helps — but chemistry matters too. Use texture as a quick field test when you’re shopping, then confirm with a known resistant variety rather than trusting feel alone.
