Plant CareThe 80/20 Rule of Gardening

Owner, Schlegel Greenhouse · June 19, 2026
Gardening is supposed to lower your stress, not add to it. The mistake I see good people make every spring is trying to garden like a professional when they don’t need to. You don’t need a perfect program — you need a few simple systems that help you succeed consistently.
Twenty Percent of the Effort, Eighty Percent of the Results
Most gardeners burn their energy on the things that barely move the needle — deadheading every single flower, fussing over perfect pruning, juggling complicated feeding schedules, chasing exotic soil recipes.
Meanwhile, the handful of things that actually decide whether your garden thrives are simple:
- ✓ Watering properly
- ✓ Choosing the right plants for your spot
- ✓ Fertilizing consistently
- ✓ Preventing weeds before they start
That’s it. Get those four right and you’ve done eighty percent of the job with twenty percent of the fuss.
The Goal Isn’t a Perfect Garden
The goal is a garden you actually enjoy. Some folks accidentally turn gardening into a second job, and then wonder why it stopped being fun. Don’t set yourself up for that. Build a system that fits your life — the time you really have, not the time you wish you had.
The Main Takeaway
Perfect gardens are stressful. Consistent gardens are beautiful. Aim for consistent.
Hoosier Tip
Pick the one chore you dread most — usually weeding or remembering to water — and solve it with a system (a pre-emergent, a hose timer, bigger pots). Removing your single biggest source of garden stress does more for your enjoyment than ten small tweaks.
