How to Grow Coleus (And Keep It Looking Its Best)

Coleus is easy to grow. But if you want it to look great all season, a few things matter.

Coleus uses a decent amount of water and prefers consistent moisture. The advantage: it bounces back extremely well. Because it’s not relying on blooms, temporary stress doesn’t ruin the plant.

Coleus is a moderate feeder. Guidance from Ball Seed and general extension recommendations suggest:

• ✓ Use a balanced fertilizer
• ✓ Avoid overfeeding
• ✓ Focus on steady growth, not aggressive push

Too much fertilizer can stretch the plant and reduce color intensity.

When coleus starts to flower, pinch the flower off. This:

Coleus doesn’t stay small. By late summer and fall it can get very large. With regular pinching:
